Coffee Dinner & Summit will present the evolution of coffee growing in the fight against global warming

Experts from the entire production chain will address the sector’s advances in good agricultural practices and the possibilities in the carbon market

The decarbonization of agricultural production presents itself as a fundamental factor in the fight against global warming and in the face of consumer demand, which is increasingly demanding for products that respect and preserve the environment. To help bring light to this debate, to present the potential and opportunities of the Brazilian coffee industry, as well as the current and future scenarios, the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) will hold the “Sustainability Panel” on May 26, as part of the 9th Coffee Dinner & Summit, at Um Rooftop, in São Paulo (SP).

Sponsored by the Brazilian Support Service to Micro and Small Companies (Sebrae), the event will bring a discussion about “Sustainable ‘carbon negative’ coffee growing in the face of global corporate goals: Brazil closer to the carbon market”, which will present an integrated vision of representatives from all links in the production chain.

Among the sub-topics are “Potentialities of Tropical Agriculture for Global Decarbonization”, “Brazilian coffee growing and the mitigation of climate change effects”, “Decarbonization, opportunities for value addition and investment”, “Towards carbon neutrality: main challenges for the coffee industry” and “Current scenario and trends for the carbon market”.

The panel, which will be moderated by Cecafé’s Social Responsibility and Sustainability manager, Silvia Pizzol, will have contributions from Eduardo Bastos, CEO of MyCarbon; Alexandre Monteiro, ESG manager at Cooxupé; Flávia Paulino da Costa, partner and director of the Guaxupé Coffee Exporter; Mario Cerutti, director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at the Lavazza Foundation; and Oscar Schaps, president of the Latin American division of StoneX.

With the expertise of each panelist, the Sustainability Panel of the 9th Coffee Dinner & Summit will present how the Brazilian coffee industry has advanced and adopted sustainable practices to mitigate the effects of climate change and intends to bring clarifications about what is necessary for the sector to participate in the carbon market.

In view of global trends and the signaling of great potential that the carbon market has, Cecafé’s general director, Marcos Matos, informs that the entity is leading the debate on current and future scenarios to help players in the production chain to prepare themselves in the best way, so that everyone, producers, industries and exporters can obtain the best possible scenarios in this promising trade.

“To explore this opportunity, in a work axis focused on market strategies and income generation in the field, Cecafé is structuring partnerships with the objective of evaluating the existing methodologies and registration processes of grouped carbon projects to support the development of a Platform of Cafés do Brasil Carbon Credits,” he concludes.

COFFEE DINNER & SUMMIT

Organized by Cecafé, the event stands out as one of the main global forums of the coffee sector, bringing together, every two years, around a thousand people and leaders of all segments of Brazilian and world coffee growing to promote business prospection, create commercial opportunities, share experiences and network, bringing together agribusiness players and coffee lovers in a spacious and cozy environment.

Under the theme “Production growth: its challenges and opportunities in times of ESG”, the ninth edition of the Coffee Dinner & Summit aims to promote debate and reflection on the economic, climatic, regulatory, and logistical challenges, and especially on the sustainable initiatives developed by Brazil and other coffee nations, which respect the criteria of socio-environmental governance.

ZERO CARBON EVENT

Honoring its pillar of action focused on socio-environmental responsibility, sustainability and food safety, Cecafé obtained the Green Seal from reforestation startup Ecooar Biodiversity to neutralize the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) with the 9th Coffee Dinner & Summit.

By calculating the carbon emissions generated during the two days of the event, the Council offset more than 2.5 tons of CO2 by planting native trees, contributing to the reforestation of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) at Fazenda Santa Emília, a coffee producer in Garça (SP), where the regeneration of the environment and the preservation of spring waters benefit, directly and indirectly, about one million people in the 62 cities in the region.
